Significant Web Failure Affects Dozens Sites and Apps
A large-scale internet outage has disrupted numerous sites and apps globally, as users noting troubles connecting to the web due to difficulties at the cloud computing system.
The impacted platforms include Snapchat, Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, in addition to several Amazon-managed operations including its main retail platform and the Ring security doorbell company.
Across the United Kingdom, the financial institution Lloyds was disrupted along with its affiliates the bank Halifax and the Scottish bank, with additional accounts of difficulties reaching the HMRC website on the start of the week. Furthermore across the UK, many Ring customers turned to online platforms to complain their doorbells were malfunctioning.
In the UK alone, notifications of problems on particular apps ran into the tens of thousands for each app.
Officials confirmed that the issue began in the eastern region of the America at AWS, a division that supplies essential online infrastructure for many businesses, who rent out capacity on AWS infrastructure. Amazon Web Services is the most extensive cloud computing service.
Shortly after midnight (PDT) in the US (morning UK time), the company announced “higher error rates and slowdowns” for Amazon's platforms in a zone on the Atlantic seaboard of the America. The ripple effect was seen to disrupt services around the world, with the outage tracking website reporting problems with the identical platforms in multiple continents.
The monitoring service Thousand Eyes, a platform that monitors online failures, also reported a rise in problems on the start of the week, including several cases situated in Virginia, the location of the eastern US data center where officials confirmed the problems began.
