UN Ends Penalties on Syria's Leader Before Presidential Visit

United Nations Security Council members voted in favour to a United States-backed measure removing restrictions on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria before his presidential meeting next week.

He was appointed transitional president after leading a rebel offensive that drove out the former president in winter 2024, ending 13 years of internal conflict.

America's diplomat Mike Waltz at the United Nations declared the global body transmitted "a strong political signal" that acknowledged Syria entered "a different period" since Assad was deposed.

Previously, he faced United Nations restrictions while commanding the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which was formerly linked to the terrorist network. The US removed HTS from a list of international terrorist organizations in July.

More Penalties Removed

Additionally, the United Nations lifted penalties against the Syrian interior official Minister Anas Khattab.

The nation's top diplomat welcomed the removal of these restrictions, declaring through digital channels: "The nation shows its gratitude to the United States and supportive states for their support of Syria and its people."

Forthcoming Presidential Visit

President Sharaa's presidential meeting this coming Monday follows US President Donald Trump stated the Middle Eastern president demonstrated "substantial headway" towards bringing peace to the conflict-ravaged nation.

Following their discussion, Trump remarked the Syrian leader had "a real shot to unify the country".

Both presidents held discussions on their first occasion during May, during Trump's Riyadh trip during a visit to the Middle East.

Subsequent to that discussion, America's leader characterized him as a "resilient figure" possessing a "powerful background".

His former militant faction operated as the terrorist network's partner inside the country until he severed ties back in 2016.

Prior United States Journey

Monday's visit will not be his initial visit to America in the current year. In September, he made history as the first Syrian leader to speak before the UN General Assembly in Manhattan after approximately sixty years.

In his speech, he said Syria was "reclaiming its rightful place within the global community" and demonstrated unity toward Gaza's residents.
